What is Hyaluronic Acid Injection?

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) was first introduced to the market in 1987, with its initial usage primarily seen in Italy and Japan. In Malaysia, it was imported and made available in the country starting from 1991. Currently, the cost of hyaluronic acid injection in Malaysia ranges from RM853 to RM2,750.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) injection is a treatment option for knee osteoarthritis that aims to provide temporary relief from pain and improve joint function. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid that lubricates and cushions the joints.

In knee osteoarthritis, the natural levels of hyaluronic acid may decrease, resulting in decreased joint lubrication and increased friction between the bones. Hyaluronic acid injections, also known as viscosupplementation, involve injecting a gel-like substance containing hyaluronic acid directly into the knee joint.

The goal of hyaluronic acid injections is to supplement the diminished hyaluronic acid in the joint and restore its lubricating and shock-absorbing properties. The injections may help reduce pain, improve joint mobility, and enhance overall joint function.

Unfortunately, while scientific reports have suggested that hyaluronic acid injections can provide pain relief, it is important to acknowledge that not all individuals respond favorably to this treatment in real clinical practice. The underlying reasons for this phenomenon remain unknown, and researchers are actively investigating the factors that may contribute to certain patients being more or less sensitive to the treatment.

Understanding why certain individuals do not respond as expected to hyaluronic acid injections is a complex and ongoing research endeavor. Various factors such as disease severity, patient characteristics, underlying mechanisms of osteoarthritis, and individual variations in the response to treatment may play a role in the heterogeneous outcomes observed. Through rigorous research, scientists strive to uncover the factors that influence treatment response and identify potential markers or predictors to personalize treatment approaches. This ongoing investigation aims to optimize patient selection and improve the overall efficacy of hyaluronic acid injections in clinical practice.
